Apple TV app comes to Amazon Fire TV sticks ahead of the launch of Apple TV Plus

August 24,2021 by Matthew Bell

Ahead of the launch of Apple's Netflix rival, Apple TV Plus , the standard Apple TV app has appeared on Amazon's Fire TV streaming devices.

Following a recent update, the Apple TV app is now available on the Fire TV Stick 4K as well as the second-generation Fire TV Stick , Samsung TVs and Roku. Support for the Fire TV Cube is expected before the end of the year, as is support for Sony and LG smart TVs, too.

Until now, Apple TV was largely the reserve of Apple's own devices from MacBooks to iPhones and iPads, and of course the Apple TV box. This rollout – which doesn't come as a surprise because Apple announced the partnership at the launch of Apple TV Plus in March – widens the app's scope to help Apple capture more audiences and subscribers for its Apple TV Plus service, set to launch on 1 November.

The Fire TV version of the Apple TV app allows lets you stream anything bought via Apple iTunes, both previously and in the future. It's not currently possible to buy shows or movies via the app, though, and this is likely because it directly competes with Amazon's own Amazon Prime service. As a result, you'll still have to buy content to watch on Apple TV via another Apple device.

Apple TV Plus doesn't come as standard with the Apple TV app. You'll still need to subscribe to the service, which costs £4.99 a month, but you need the app to stream its content, regardless of which device you're watching on.
